Wind turbine scheduled for demolition and disposal

May 29, 2019

A contract award has been issued to demolish and dispose of the wind turbine at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center. Total contract award is $326,322.00. The current schedule of work calls for demolition to occur July 15-24, 2019.  The contractor is required to recycle, reuse and/or waste divert most of the turbine components.

As previously announced on August 17, 2018, VA fully explored all options to remediate the wind turbine and determined to remove and dispose of the turbine in fiscal year 2019.

An extensive study determined that the existing turbine cannot be repaired.

The study assessed alternatives including repowering by installing a new or reconditioned nacelle onto the existing tower; replacement with a new turbine including foundation and tower; and demolition and disposal of the existing turbine.

Analysis of these alternatives determined that for the repowering option the payback period exceeds life expectancy, and that full replacement is financially not feasible.
